LADY VENDETTA e OLDBOY, che Tarantino aveva adorato e premiato, avevano preparato il terreno all'universo del focoso, per usare un eufemismo, coreano. Padronanza di uno stile indubbiamente spettacolare anche se ai limiti del compiacimento, violenza che all'esordio di Cannes aveva preso di sorpresa la critica, raffinata e talora sofisticata provocazione. Con molte scuse, in primis sulla violenza: non fosse poiché il tema di quelle opere girava tutto attorno alla redenzione di un protagonista che aveva più di una ragione per vendicarsi. Tutto si complica con questo THIRST (ecco il mio sangue...), che a raccontarlo arrischia di far fuggire più di un potenziale spettatore. Film di vampiri vagamente ispirato alla Thérèse Raquin di Zola, ma proprio a modo suo. Con un prete cattolico in Corea fattosi vampiro dopo essersi sottoposto ad un'esperienza medica in Africa: che, per alimentarsi in fase di convalescenza, succhierà sangue da fonti più o meno raccapriccianti. Senza evitare la medesima sorte alla donna amata; destinata, come ben sappiamo in casi del genere, a seguire l'identico destino.

Tutto ciò, ci mancherebbe, reso meno truce da una certa dose di humour; e da varie illuminazioni espressive che servono a relativizzare la crudeltà e la provocazione dell'assunto. Considerazione che non riescono a salvare il film: poiché la mancanza di misura (sembra un paradosso in un cinema tutto giocato sull'eccesso) lo conduce direttamente a quel compiacimento che mina il cinema del coreano. Incerto, in un a pellicola che avrebbe comunque essere stata ridotta di un terzo, tra l'horror, il fantastico e i vampiri, tutte faccende che non dimentichiamolo hanno reso anche grande il cinema fin dai tempi di Murnau, THIRST finisce per essere quello che non avrebbe dovuto, un grandguignol sempre più ripetitivo. Firmato, certo, da un virtuoso.

Mastery of a style that was undoubtedly spectacular even if bordering on smug, violence that had taken critics by surprise on its Cannes debut, refined and sometimes sophisticated provocation. With many excuses, first and foremost about violence: it was not because the theme of those works revolved entirely around the redemption of a protagonist who had more than one reason to take revenge. Everything becomes more complicated with this THIRST (here's my blood...), which, to tell the tale, risks making more than one potential viewer run away. A vampire film loosely inspired by Zola's Thérèse Raquin, but in its own way. With a Catholic priest in Korea who became a vampire after undergoing a medical experience in Africa: he will suck blood from more or less gruesome sources to feed himself during his convalescence. Without avoiding the same fate for the beloved woman; destined, as we all know in such cases, to follow the same fate.

All this, we would miss, made less grim by a certain dose of humour; and by various expressive illuminations that serve to relativise the cruelty and provocation of the premise. Considerations that fail to save the film: for the lack of measure (it seems a paradox in a cinema all about excess) leads it straight to the complacency that undermines the Korean's cinema. Uncertain, in a film that would have been reduced by a third anyway, between horror, fantasy and vampires, all matters that have also made cinema great since the days of Murnau, THIRST ends up being what it should not have been, an increasingly repetitive grandguignol. Signed, of course, by a virtuoso.
